Definition
Fruit is the fleshy--sometimes sweet--part of the plant that disseminates the seeds. Fruit is a plant ovary, part of the plant's reproductive system.
Function
Nature intends fruit seeds to be eaten; they have evolved to survive the journey through the digestive system.
When eliminated, seeds are scattered away from the parent plant to sprout without competing for resources.
Commonly Eaten Seeds
Many fruit seeds are eaten without a second thought, including the tiny seeds in strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. They also include the soft seeds in fruits often referred to as "vegetables"--zucchini, tomatoes, cucumber, okra and eggplant.
Benefits
Seeds are an excellent source of fibre. Many fruit seeds are high in vitamins, including B-17. Apple and apricot seeds may have cancer-fighting properties.
Caution
Unripe fruit may contain small amounts of toxic substances that can cause digestive upset; these disappear as the fruit ripens. Plants discourage unripe fruit from being eaten because the seeds are immature.
